Naan
The story
The naan, a word that just means 'bread' in its original Persian, is a flatbread native to the Middle-East, Central Asia, and the Indian sub continent. The naan has been in the Indian subcontinent and Central Asia for thousands of years, but it only began to resemble the fluffy, leavened bread we know today around 1300 AD when yeast was first introduced. Naan bread became a staple in royal Mughal cuisines during the Mu ghal era in India and eventually was spread to the common populace. In the region that is now Pakistan, naan became a staple food, en joyed at any meal, commonly served with curry dishes, used to scoop up food, or simply brushed with ghee (clarified butter).
