Rooh Afza

Ramadan Cookbook

The story

Rooh Afza, with its vibrant pink hue and floral- sweet flavor, is more than just a drink in Pakistan – it's a symbol of Ramadan itself. Its history is a fascinating blend of tradition and a quest for relief from the scorching Indian summers. In 1906, Hakim Abdul Majeed. a renowned Unani medicine practitioner in Old Delhi, began experimenting with herbs and botanicals to concoct a drink that would combat heat exhaustion. He perfected a blend of cooling herbs, fruits, and flowers with a beautiful rose-like fragrance and color. Thus Rooh Afza was born, its name meaning "refresher of the soul".
