I Tried Local Donuts
About this video
Donuts in front of villagers from rural Punjab, Pakistan — that's the whole Tribal People Try recipe, and it keeps working because nothing is scripted.
What is donuts?
Donuts are rings of enriched dough, deep-fried and glazed or sugared. Krispy Kreme and Dunkin' are the American names; the Portuguese, Poles and Indians all have their own fried-dough sweets.
What to watch for
Fried dough in sugar is a language everyone speaks. The reaction is about how soft and how sweet — a glazed Krispy Kreme is much sweeter and lighter than anything from a village kitchen, and a few people find it too much after one.
The comparison they always make
Balushahi is the Punjabi cousin: fried, syrup-soaked, denser. Gulab jamun comes up too. Donuts win on softness and lose on staying power.
