What it is

Soft drinks: Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Dr Pepper, Fanta, Sprite, and the energy drinks — Red Bull, Monster, Prime. Coke and Pepsi are everywhere in Pakistan; the American flavours like root beer and Dr Pepper are not.

What to watch for

Fizz is familiar; medicinal flavours are not. Root beer and Dr Pepper are compared to cough syrup almost without fail. Energy drinks are tasted with suspicion and the caffeine warning on the can gets read aloud.

The village comparison

Cola with a meal is normal in Pakistan. Traditional drinks are lassi, Rooh Afza in summer and lemon shikanjvi, all of which get invoked when a fizzy drink disappoints.
