Tribal People Try Peanut Butter

Every time the tribe has tasted peanut butter: 8 videos of first impressions from villagers in rural Punjab, Pakistan, usually American food they have never seen before.

Also covers: pb&j, pbj, peanut butter and jelly, reese's, reeses, jif, skippy

What it is

Peanut butter is ground roasted peanuts, sometimes with sugar and salt, spread on bread or eaten from the jar. It is an American staple that barely exists in Pakistani kitchens, and Reese's cups pair it with chocolate.

What to watch for

Sticky, thick and salty-sweet, it coats the mouth in a way nothing local does, and the first spoonful is always followed by reaching for water. Peanut butter with chocolate divides people sharply.

The village comparison

Peanuts are a winter street snack, roasted in the shell. Grinding them into a paste and spreading it on bread is a new idea, and the sweetness is the part that seems odd.
