Tribal People Try Middle Eastern Food

Every time the tribe has tasted middle eastern food: 2 videos of first impressions from villagers in rural Punjab, Pakistan, usually Middle Eastern food they have never seen before.

Also covers: arabic food, arab food, mandi, kabsa, shawarma, falafel, hummus, tabbouleh, manakish, turkish food, lebanese food, lebanese foods

What it is

Middle Eastern and Arab food: shawarma, hummus, falafel, mandi, kabsa, kunafa, dates, Turkish and Lebanese mezze. Much of it reached Pakistan through workers returning from the Gulf, so some dishes are half-familiar.

What to watch for

Shawarma and mandi are already loved in Pakistan; the interest is in hummus (mashed chickpeas eaten cold), tahini's bitterness, and kunafa's cheese-in-dessert idea. Falafel is compared to pakora and usually accepted.

The village comparison

Chickpeas are chana, eaten hot and spiced. Serving them cold as a dip is the leap. Kabsa's spiced rice is recognised as a cousin of pulao.
