Tribal People Try Hot Dogs

Every time the tribe has tasted hot dogs: 8 videos of first impressions from villagers in rural Punjab, Pakistan, usually American food they have never seen before.

Also covers: hot dogs, hotdog, hotdogs, corn dog, corn dogs, sausage

What it is

A hot dog is a thin cooked sausage in a split soft roll with mustard, ketchup, onions or relish. It came to America with German immigrants and stuck to baseball, street carts and summer.

What to watch for

The texture is the story: smooth, bouncy, uniform, nothing like meat cut from a bone. People who grew up with tandoori chicken and mutton curry find it hard to place what animal they are eating, and they say so.

The village comparison

There is no sausage tradition in the village, so the nearest thing is a seekh kebab in a bun — same shape, completely different bite. Beef or chicken hot dogs are used in the videos.

If you cook it: Warm the sausage gently; boiling splits it. Toast the roll.
