Tribal People Try Fish and Chips

Every time the tribe has tasted fish and chips: 4 videos of first impressions from villagers in rural Punjab, Pakistan, usually British food they have never seen before.

Also covers: fish & chips, fish n chips, battered fish, chippy

What it is

Fish and chips is white fish in a beer or plain batter, deep-fried, served with thick-cut fried potatoes, salt and malt vinegar. It has been Britain's takeaway since the 1860s.

What to watch for

The batter is light and puffy, closer to a pakora coat than to fried chicken, which helps. The vinegar is the surprise — sharp and sour on hot potatoes — and mushy peas are usually left alone.

The village comparison

Fried fish is a winter tradition in Punjab, masala-dusted and eaten with chutney. Against that, English batter tastes plain, and the tribe tends to reach for green chutney by the second piece.

If you cook it: Very cold batter into very hot oil. Chips get fried twice.
