What it is

Coffee in its western forms: black filter coffee, espresso, cappuccino, Starbucks frappuccinos, cold brew. Pakistan is a tea country, and most of the tribe had never tasted coffee before the camera arrived.

What to watch for

Black coffee is bitter in a way nothing in village food prepares you for, and the faces show it. Milky, sugary coffees fare far better; a Starbucks caramel drink is essentially a cold dessert and is treated as one.

The village comparison

Doodh patti — strong tea boiled in milk with sugar — is drunk several times a day. Every coffee is compared to it, and coffee usually loses on the first cup.

Watch
