Tribal People Try Bread

Every time the tribe has tasted bread: 17 videos of first impressions from villagers in rural Punjab, Pakistan, usually International food they have never seen before.

Also covers: baguette, sourdough, croissant, croissants, bagel, bagels, toast, naan, roti, paratha, chapati, pita

What it is

Bread varies more than almost any food: French baguettes, sourdough, Italian focaccia, German rye, American sliced white, Middle Eastern pita. Each is judged in these videos against the roti and naan the tribe eats three times a day.

What to watch for

Crust is the difference. Village breads are soft and pliable; a baguette is hard outside and airy inside, and sourdough is sour on purpose, which needs explaining. Butter on bread is welcome; bread on its own is not a meal.

The village comparison

The tribe are bread experts. Roti from a tandoor, naan, paratha, makai ki roti — they know exactly what good bread is, and they grade foreign loaves accordingly.
